I have been patient with the development of Alex Smith but after this past Sunday's game it was hard to keep upbeat about his future. But now I ask you is it Alex Smith's fault. He could have definitely won the game if he hit one of two wide open receivers that would have resulted in touchdowns. He has regressed this season.
Here are some reasons it may not be Smith's fault...
>He has had four different offenses to run the past four years including college
>Norv Turner left in March. No coordinators leave that late in the game.
>He has worked hard to get better but maybe the teaching isn't there.
>Joe Montana and Steve Young began their 49er careers by playing in spots where they could succeed.
>The offensive line injuries. We lost two starting linemen in one week and Smith has been sacked many times
>His shoulder injury is still effecting his throwing ability.
>The play calling has been horrid, with all lack of pass blocking can we throw in a screen.
>The receivers suck. The Niners lead the league in drops. Jackson was not an upgrade over Antonio Bryant. I actually miss Antonio Bryant. With our 30th pick in the first round next year can we get DeSean Jackson.
Reasons why it is his fault...
>He doesn't look off his receivers
>He doesn't hit open receivers
>He doesn't run when he should
>He wastes too many time outs
>He looks scared in the pocket
>There have been a whole list of backup QBs that have led their team to 300 yard passing games or 3TD passes in a game. Smith has never done either. When you are starting Cleo Lemon and Damon Huard over the guy there is a problem.
>When defenses have 8 in the box and sometimes 9 then complete a pass, call an audible, do something.
>He fumbles too much.
The one thing I do know is the 49ers have to turn it around but they haven't shown me any signs that they can. I think Mike Nolan is just a salesman. He makes you feel good about the team but blows a lot of hot air. He was giving full reign of this team and he has never proven he can judge personnel. He was giving Bill Walsh duties and he is no Bill Walsh. If you read the Santa Clara Press Democrat there is a good article on how Nolan (13-27) has had a horrendous three year run. http://www1.pressdemocrat.com/article/20071106/SPORTS/711060325
I cannot tell if it is Alex Smith's fault. I do know that he is going to have at least another year to prove himself. He seems like a good, hard working guy. I am rooting for him to improve. However, if he has another year like this then I will be the first one calling KNBR to get rid of him. And please Alex, just throw a 300 yard game before the season ends. PLEASE! s

I love your idea for next year's draft pick...and no Golden Bear bias there...
