After almost 20 hours of traveling we arrived in Barcelona on May 11th around 8 am. We left San Ramon for the SF airport at around 5 am on Saturday. We had to find out how to get to the ship, grab some Euros, and the worst part for me was I really needed to shave.
Upon arriving we noticed that Spanish is not that language of choice for most Barcelonians. They speak Catalan which is pretty different so my Spanish 3 knowledge was not that helpful. We ended hopping on a van that other people on our cruise were jumping on and it toured Barcelona.
The main attraction that we needed to see was La Sagrada Familia which is still under construction. It was first constructed by Antoni Gaudi who built numerous structures in Barcelona in the late 1800s. He worked on it for about 40 years and it is now being completed with local artists. I think It will be done in 25 years. So hopefully we can make it back. The temple portrays the life of Christ through amazingly detailed sculptures.
The front shows the birth of Christ, the side shows the life of Christ and the back is the resurrection. The resurrection is currently being worked on by contemporary artists
Gaudi also built an amazing apartment building La Pedrera. The roof of the the building has beautiful arches and chimneys.
We also found out that most of Barcelona is an industrial city. After first leaving the airport there were factories everywhere. We passed the Olympic Village which is in a scenic area by the beach. When we got to the ships terminal we planned on going back out to barcelona to grab some tapas, eat some palella, and maybe check out the picasso and gaudi museums. However, it took awhile to board the ship and when we finally did, I just wanted to sleep. I crashed when we got to our room and was knocked out until we had to practice a cruise emergency evacuation drill. We had a good dinner that night and I was out the rest of the night. Here is a pic from our Anniversary dinner. We sat at a table with four other couples who became like family during the trip. Everytime we would run into them, there was such a sense of comfort since we didn't know any of the other 2000 passengers. DANG, I still didn't have time to shave.
After sailing out of Barcelona, the first day on the ship was a day at sea. We pretty much used the day to hit the spa. Aw yeah it felt good too. Most of the day we slept in because we were still out of it from just traveling there. Dinner was a formal dinner and I finally shaved! And it felt better than the spa.
One last thing. We noticed there was a sushi bar! So right after our dinner we had to try the sushi. And it was worth it! That was the end of the first full day on the ship. We had to get to bed early because we wanted to see the sail into Nice, France. We had a full day planned so back to bed.

Wow...that chapel looks weird...like a before and after picture.
Sounds like you guys had an absolute blast...and this was only day 1!
I bet the sculptures/reliefs will be added to the plain back areas of the church. If not, the back will be really disappointing. I bet MAC appreciated the shave too. :)
