Friday Night Lights

Okay, it is known that I am a football fan so it would figure I would like a TV show like Friday Night Lights. Heck, I read the book over 10 years ago when I was still playing football and I loved it. So when Friday Night Lights came out on DVD I had to watch it. I wanted to watch it last season but only caught a few episodes as Mary Anne was still into Dancing with the Stars. But thankfully, she watched Season One on DVD with me and is now addicted to the series as I am. We churned out all, I think 5 discs, in one week!

But the show is not just about football. The show takes place in Dillon, a small town in Texas, where Football is life. Everything centers around football but the focus is on the intriguing characters that live in Dillon. There is Jason Street who was the #1 rated QB in Texas and in the first episode gets paralyzed. He tries to find a way to survive without the use of his legs. Matt Sarusen is the backup QB who takes care of his grandmother by himself and is the ultimate good guy. He falls for the coaches daughter and they start dating much to the displeasure of her parents. Coach Taylor and his wife are fine actors. Coach has to deal with all of the crazy situations that his players put in front of him, a town that wants him fired, boosters that try to make decisions for him, a daughter that is dating one of his players, and people suing him. Mrs. Coach, as Matt calls her, is a school counselor and sees the other side of a lot of coaches players and the player's friends. She is also put into the limelight as a town leader as she is the coach's wife and she has to deal with so much from the mayor, the lack of time that her husband has for her as coach's wife. I would tell you more but I want you to check it out and I don't want to ruin it for you.

The acting in the show is superb as is the writing. The story is compelling. Having to wait for it from week to week instead of having the whole season in front of me is killing me. But I will wait and I will watch because it is one of the greatest shows on television. Sadly, the rating for the show are hurting. It almost was canceled after just one season. But that doesn't mean its a bad show. Just ask Arrested Development and Studio 60 fans, not to mention Herman's Head. So if you have DVR or Tivo Set it on NBC at 9 pm on Friday Night's to record FNL. Its kind of ironic that FNL would be on Friday Nights when the bulk of their target audience would be out watching football but like I said this show is not just about football. It is about relationships, the struggles of life, and overcoming those struggles.

This show rocks, and so does Herman's Head! I wonder how they got Lisa Simpson to do the voice of Yeardley Smith?!?
